A PhD position is available at LIMSI in Paris-Orsay, in the VENISE team. The topic is to exploit Virtual Reality to comprehend and experiment in a direct and intuitive way, some physical phenomena otherwise inaccessible to human experience. This project is funded by the National research Agency for a duration of 3 years.
Position is due to start by end of 2008.

Two topics are envisioned as possible research studies:

The work could focus on the study of the perceptions in a relativistic universe, as predicted by the Special Theory of Relativity: length contraction, time dilation, etc. These perceptions will first be visual, but other channels of sensory feedback (haptics, tactile, audio) are already under development on the Virtual Reality platform of the VENISE team and will be available for this project.

A second possibility is the rendering of non-relativistic Newtonian gravity fields, e.g. Earth's gravity field, focusing on the use of haptic devices (force and tactile device).

Required skills: excellent knowledge of 3D geometry, background in mathematics and physics (BS), skills in 3D graphics modeling and rendering (OpenGL), C/C++ programming. Earlier experience in Virtual Reality or image processing would be most appreciated.

Candidates should apply by sending Resume and motivation letter to Dr JM Vézien:
