Driver assistance systems and services support or take over the tasks of driver. Examples are Adaptive Cruise Control and Navigation systems that use real-time traffic information. But to what extend can they improve traffic safety, traffic efficiency and environmental impacts and driver comfort?

The Applications of Integrated Driver Assistance (AIDA) research centre focuses on the analysis and modelling of the interaction between driver assistance systems and services, driver behaviour and traffic flow behaviour. It was established in 2003 at the University of Twente together with the Netherlands organization of applied scientific research TNO. AIDA is located at the Faculty of Engineering Technology of the University of Twente at the Center for Transport Studies and the Laboratory of Design, Production and Management. AIDA gives a course on Intelligent Transport Systems and supervises 4-5 Master students each year.
AIDA is looking for new staff members for the following projects.

1. Route choice and traffic safety
In this project a pilot study will be conducted with 20 vehicles. The pilot is aims to motivate driver to choose safe routes by a variable insurance premium. In this project AIDA will conduct research aimed at the analysis and modeling of route choice, based on data from the pilot as well as on data from route choice simulator experiments. (vac 07/189A)

2. Traffic flow based specifications for Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control
Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is an Adaptive Cruise Control which uses vehicle-vehicle communication. When many vehicles are equipped with CACC, the dynamics of the traffic flow can change drastically, for instance with respect to throughput and stability. AIDA will develop specifications for CACC in order to optimize traffic flow characteristics, using both analytical and simulation models for the traffic flow. (vac.07/189B).

3. Development of a simulation framework for driver assistance systems and services
AIDA uses simulation tools to support the development and evaluation of driver assistance systems and services. Currently, AIDA uses traffic flow simulations, a route choice simulator and various driving simulator. In this project AIDA will develop a common simulation framework that will combine the existing tools, enable coupling with other tools and maintain libraries of vehicle, driver, sensor and communication models. This project will review the requirements and state of the art of simulation frameworks and virtual reality. It will specify and implement a common simulation framework and apply it for a selected use case. (vac 07/189C)

4. Human factors in the design process of cooperative driver assistance systems
AIDA will study how to integrate human factors into the design process of cooperative driver assistance systems. Relevant aspects are a dynamic task environment, the use of simulation to evaluate design alternatives, improvement of stakeholder involvement and the applicability of design support tools in current design practice. The project aims at enhancing the design process by considering both the participation of end-users through simulator experiments as well as by the use driver models. (vac 07/189D).

Your qualifications: You have a Master or PhD degree in a relevant discipline, such as civil engineering, applied mathematics, information technology with excellent modeling skills. You preferably have experience in the field of traffic flow modeling, human factors or driver assistance systems. For project 4, you may have a background in human factors or product/interaction design. You like to work in a multidisciplinary work environment. You have excellent communication skills both orally and written in English and preferably in Dutch.

Our offer: Depending on your qualifications we offer a temporary contract of 1 year minimum as a researcher (monthly salary € 2279-4190), PhD researcher (€ 1956-2502) or assistant-professor (€ 2740-4190). The position of assistant-professor requires a PhD degree as well as proven teaching capabilities. Extension of the contract is possible based on the availability of new projects. Part-time arrangements are possible. The University of Twente provides excellent facilities for professional and personal development.

Application: In your application you indicate for which vacancy number(s) and position you want to apply. You are invited to send your application together with curriculum vitae, score list and names and addresses of referees by email to personeelszaken@ctw.utwente.nl or by normal post to University of Twente, Faculty CTW, Personnel Department, P.O.Box 217, 7500 AE Enschede, the Netherlands.
